Using social care experience as a Shared Lives carer, Glyn and Craig’s story

https://youtu.be/59eo78Jp12M

Glyn and Craig both have social care experience and have worked in care homes supporting people with learning disabilities and additional needs.

They decided to become Shared Lives carers to have more independence in their role and to spend more time at home.

When Jamie left foster care he moved in with Glyn and Craig. They enjoy days out together as a family and Glyn and Craig love the opportunity to give person-shaped support and really see the impact they make every day.

His carer likes to take him to places where he can really unleash his wild side – the theme park, the karaoke club, adventure holidays.

Jack’s also got to make friends with other people who live with and stay with his carer. His carer loves spending her days outside of the office and out there in the community.

Deb’s singing lights up her Shared Lives carer’s home

Deb has lived with her Shared Lives carer, Sandra, for a few year. She lives in Sandra’s home with her and really is a part of the family. Here she is singing with Sandra’s brother.

‘Hearing Debs gorgeous singing echoing through my home is priceless’, say Sandra. Being a Shared Lives carer is different from any care role. It’s more like foster care because people move into your home with you. Our carers love that they can work from home and get the rewards of seeing people grow every day.

Annabel learns parenting skills with her Shared Lives carer

Annabel recently became an aunty. She wanted to learn about babies to be able to look after her niece. Her Shared Lives carer has helped her to learn parenting skills with her doll.

She’s learnt how to change a nappy, how to hold a baby safely and enjoyed shopping for clothes in her local charity shop.

This has helped her to feel more confident as an Aunty and to develop new skills.

Well done Annabel!
